Valley Stream Car Crash Leaves Girl Dead, Sister in Critical Condition

Posted on Jan 28, 2014

A fatal car accident in Valley Stream left a 15-year-old girl dead and her 13-year-old sister in critical condition, according to Nassau County police. The accident occurred on West Merrick Road near Boden Avenue on Monday night. The sisters were passengers in a 2000 Toyota driven by their 19-year-old brother that was going west on West Merrick Road and hit a 2009 Toyota Camry that was also traveling west and made a U-turn in front of them. After colliding with the Camry, the 2000 Toyota collided with multiple parking meters and hit a utility pole before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes, according to police.

The 15-year-old was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where she was pronounced dead at 10:31 p.m. Her sister, who was ejected from the vehicle, was taken to a hospital with what police described as "severe head and body trauma." She remains in critical condition.

The 19-year-old brother suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said the 31-year-old driver of the car that was hit making the U-turn was uninjured.

Neither driver was charged in the crash, and police said that at this time no criminality is suspected. An investigation is still continuing. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
