fiery crashA massive 35-vehicle vehicle pile-up on the Long Island Expressway in Shirley that took place on December 19, 2012, left one person dead and 33 injured. The fatal automobile accident, which occurred near Exit 68 at 2:30 pm, began when an out-of-control tractor-trailer smashed into several vehicles and set off a chain reaction of fiery crashes.

The tractor-trailor, driven by Raymond Simoneau, 42, of Rockingham, Vt., was heading eastbound on the LIE with a truck filled with debris from Hurricane Sandy. The tractor-trailer was owned by Jewell Transportation, Inc., a Vermont trucking company that has been cited at least 23 times for unsafe driving since 2011, according to a Newsday report.
