Man Shot during Fight at Hempstead, Long Island Nightclub--Is the Club Responsible?

Long Island's many night clubs are popular places for hanging out late at night, but too often the combination of alcohol, crowds, and sometimes weapons has caused injuries. Recently, Shemoi Edwards, a 20-year-old from Uniondale, was arrested when he stared shooting at a crowd outside Club Nakisaki in Hempstead. A second man, Kevin Hewitt of Hempstead, was also arrested when he tried to prevent police officers from arresting Edwards. When criminal acts occur at nightclubs, questions may arise over negligent security. Some questions to ask:
• Was the club overcrowded? Often clubs are dark and can become very dangerous if they are overcrowded. It is important for clubs to have adequate crowd control.

• If the suspect was drunk, did the club serve him drink after drink, knowing he had reached his limit? Was the suspect old enough to legally drink?
