How Distracted Walking Causes Pedestrian Accidents on Long Island

Goldstein and Bashner | Long Island Distracted Walkers

We have all heard in recent years how distracted driving is a major cause of accidents and injuries, but most people have not considered how distracted walking causes pedestrian accidents. Accidents that occur because a pedestrian is not paying attention to her surroundings often lead to devastating injuries.

What is distracted walking?

Distracted walking occurs anytime a pedestrian loses focus on the sidewalk in front of her. This can happen in many ways, including:

  • Texting
  • Surfing the Web
  • Reading or responding to emails
  • Checking social media
  • Watching videos
  • Listening to music with headphones
  • Reading a book, newspaper, or other material
  • Eating or drinking
  • Digging in a purse or backpack
  • Talking on the phone
  • Engaging in conversation with others

How does distracted walking cause accidents?

Accidents can result from any of the behaviors listed above if the pedestrian:

  • Trips over a sidewalk hazard or curb
  • Ignores traffic signals
  • Steps off the sidewalk, into traffic
  • Walks into a stationary object
  • Walks into another pedestrian
  • Does not hear or see a cyclist

Is distracted walking really an issue?

Distracted walking is both more common and more dangerous than you might believe. Moreover, statistics show it is a growing issue, thanks to the advent of smartphones and other handheld devices.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, injuries suffered by distracted pedestrians have more than doubled since 2004. The study reports that approximately 60 percent of all pedestrians walk while distracted regularly.

The National Safety Council issued its first report on distracted walking in 2015. According to this report, more than 11,100 pedestrians suffered injuries in distraction-related incidents between 2000 and 2011. Other significant findings include:

  • More than half of all distracted walking injuries occur at home
  • About 54 percent of those injured are under the age of 40
  • Almost 80 percent of distracted walking injuries occur during falls

Goldstein and Bashner When it comes to the capacity to generate profound upheaval and anguish in the lives of those involved, almost nothing rivals a serious personal injury event stemming from the negligence of others. The physical suffering, financial pressures and family strain that so often result from such circumstances can seem insurmountable unless justice and accountability can be obtained from those responsible.
