Seven months after the allegations destroyed his career and catalyzed the #MeToo movement, the once-powerhouse movie producer Harvey Weinstein turned himself in recently to face the charges. The charges stem from encounters with two of the dozens of women who have accused him of sexual misdeeds. The misdeeds ranged from harassment to sexual assault. Mr. Weinstein is facing rape and sexual misconduct charges, but was released on $1 million cash bail. He was fitted with a GPS tracking device after his arrest.
“This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually,” Manhattan Assistant Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said in court. The investigation is on-going, but it’s significant progress which we hope will ultimately lead to justice being served.
According to attorney Neal Goldstein, partner at Goldstein and Bashner, “Being a victim of sexual assault comes with its own set of fears and hardships. It takes bravery to come forward. High profile cases such as these, often help others to come forward to seek justice and perhaps closure. One does not have to be an actress or a celebrity to pursue a claim against someone who wrongfully violates or assaults you. In our practice we see it often. These predators exist in all areas of employment, education, and just about every aspect of our personal lives. Anyone is at risk of being sexually assaulted and far too many have been.”
