I have to admit, I am a bit baffled at the increase in train crossing accidents on Long Island where cars are on the tracks and being struck by trains. I understand some of the accidents are due to the fault of the drivers but not all of them.
Just Tuesday a Long Island Rail Road train struck a car on the tracks in Patchogue. The crash occurred around noon at the Rider Avenue crossing. The driver of the vehicle, reportedly a man in his 50s, was injured and taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. His condition is unknown. Thankfully there were no injuries reported from passengers on the train.
The impact of the crash sent the car into the side of Swezey Fuel Co. No one inside the business was hurt. At this time, we don’t know why the car was on the tracks.
This accident comes just 24 hours after a sport utility vehicle was struck by a westbound train at the Rocklyn Avenue grade-level crossing in East Rockaway. That crash, involving a train from Long Beach to Penn Station, occurred at 12:25 p.m. Monday and injured a 63-year-old woman from St. Albans, police and railroad officials said. The woman, whose identity was not released, was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, complaining of back injuries. Again, no injuries from the passengers of that train were reported. They are extremely lucky.
