Earlier this year, Suffolk police arrested 54-year-old middle school teacher Thomas Barton at his home in Medford, NY. Barton is being prosecuted for utilizing his position of power as a teacher to have an inappropriate sexual relationship with one of his former students who was 16 years old at the time. Barton was charged with rape and endangering the welfare of a child.

The inappropriate relationship between Barton and his former student started when she was only 15 years old. Prosecutors say that the relationship between the two grew quickly, and when the girl had turned 16 years old on June 2018, they engaged in sexual intercourse and oral sex.

Brentwood School District has responded to the charges and stated that Barton has been administratively resigned from his position at the middle school and is banned from entering school grounds. A spokesperson from the school district stated that Barton worked in the district for thirty years. Suffolk police states that there could be more victims.
