Every summer the Wantagh Parkway is filled with the traffic of Long Islanders heading down to Jones Beach or the many other parks and beaches that line Ocean Parkway. Cars filled with famiies or friends looking for a fun day at the beach, fishing, boating or taking in a concert at Nikon Theater. Unfortunately, this parkway has been the site of numerous car and bike accidents.
These Wantagh Parkway car accidents are caused by:
- Poor lighting
- Lack of guard rails
- Adjacent exit/entrance ramps that at times can be confused with other turns (such as on Old Country Road by Carman Avenue and also Hempstead Turnpike at Bellmore Road)
- Narrow lanes
- Drunk drivers after concerts or day of drinking on beach
- The roundabout (traffic circle) where it ends at Jones Beach. Unfortunately drivers with the yield sign frequently do not yield. There are also confused drivers who break or change over several lanes without looking to get where they want to be.
We have received a number of calls about accidents on this highway, and current state construction projects are helping to make it safer.
