Long Island Anti-Bullying Scholarship

anti-bullying scholarshipBullying has steadily risen over the years as something students face in their daily lives.  The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying and the law firm of Goldstein & Bashner has created a unique opportunity for high school students to create a Community Action Plan that will provide a selected individual with a financial scholarship and the opportunity to execute their proposal in their community.

Scholarship Task:

Provide an effective and scalable action plan (a plan outlining actions needed to reach a goal) to combat bullying in our Long Island communities.

Rules & Guidelines:

  1. Participants must be currently enrolled in either a public or private Long Island high school.
  2. Essays must be a maximum of 500 words. Essays must be accompanied by a short video, introducing their essay and a filled out essay cover sheet. Videos should be a maximum of ONE minutes long.*
  3. Essays should illustrate a clear understanding of the issue of cyberbullying as well as a clear and executable plan to combat the problem. A sample grading rubric is below.
  4. Should you be selected as a winner, you must be present at the LICAB 2nd Annual Fall Gala on October 21, 2017 in order to receive the scholarship.

*In the event a video is unable to be submitted via email, applicants must send the remaining required attachments and a note explaining the video submission issue. LICAB will make best efforts to assist applicants via other means.

Prize Winner:

  1. Will be announced/notified on Monday, October 16th, 2017 via email and awarded $2,000.00
  2. Will be given the opportunity to work together with The Coalition to execute their plan throughout their community.
  3. Will be required to attend, along with two guests, LICAB’s 2nd Annual Fall Gala on Saturday, October 21st at the historic Woodside Club in Muttontown to be honored and presented with their prize. Other guests may attend at a special rate.

Simple Submission Instructions:

All submissions must be submitted via e-mail to  scholarship@licab.org  and must be received on or before Friday, October 13th, 2017.  Submissions must include 3 attachments:

1)   Completed cover sheet

2)   Typed Essay (maximum of 500 words) (Attached Word Document)

3)   Introductory Video (maximum one minute in length)

2017 Scholarship Winner: Terrance Cameron

Terrance Cameron Winner of the $2,000 Anti-Bullying Scholarship award

Terrance Cameron, the 2017 winner of the Anti Bullying Honor Scholarship, is a senior at Oyster Bay High School and founder of Friday Friends, a service that once a month pairs special needs kids with volunteers to do something fun and provide the student’s parents with a night off. Since it’s founding, Friday’s Friends has now grown to two locations with over 140 participants.
In addition to his role with Friday Friends, Terrance is also the varsity captain of the cross country, winter track, and lacrosse teams and Vice President of the student council. We commend Terrance for all the work he’s done already to combat bullying in the community and we are excited to see what the future holds for Friday’s Friends.
