A woman passenger was killed and three injured in a three-car collision in Long Beach on Tuesday afternoon. Long Beach firefighters were forced to cut two of the drivers from their vehicles after the crash, which took place at East Park Avenue and Maple Boulevard at about 4:20 p.m., according to Fire Chief Richard Corbett.
Ethel Bernstein, 78, of Long Beach was taken to Long Beach Medical Center and pronounced dead at 7pm. The drivers of all three vehicles were taken to Long Beach Medical Center and South Nassau Community Hospital with serious injuries.
According to witnesses and the police, a man driving a Honda, with Bernstein as a passenger, was going westbound on Lido Boulevard and lost control, striking a brick median and a power line before careening to the east side of East Park Avenue and Maple Boulevard, where the car slammed into a Ford Taurus and then a white van.
The car hitting the power lines caused a brief power outage, which affected some homes in the vicinity.
