If you live in New York City or Long Island, walking is a part of everyday life. Unfortunately, however, even walking to your destination can be dangerous. On Tuesday, two people suffered in accidents while attempting to cross the street. One of them tragically lost their life while the other, a teenager, is critically injured.
Authorities say that Barney Pinkney, a 63-year-old Army Veteran, was killed as he was attempting to cross Morningside Avenue at 124th Street in Harlem outside of the crosswalk at approximately 7:40 p.m.
Pinkney’s brother, Russel Lowery, 53, said that his brother was struck by a 2009 Saturn as he was crossing the street. “He was just crossing the street. One minute you're there and the next, it's just over," Lowery said.
The driver remained at the scene of the fatal crash. Pinkney was rushed by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital, but later died as the result of the injuries he sustained in the accident.
Earlier on Tuesday, a 15-year-old boy had been hit by a motorcyclist and has been left critically hurt as he crossed E. 43rd St. by Church Ave and East Flatbush. His identity was not released by authorities.
