Police Chase Ends in Fatality in Cambria Heights

Posted on Jul 15, 2016

NYPDA police pursuit in Queens has left one elderly woman dead and a pedestrian hurt on Thursday.

According to authorities, the accident happened at approximately 1:00 p.m. when police were pursuing the robber of a stolen cell phone. The thief, driving a BMW, was traveling at a high rate of speed on 225th Street when he blew through a red light at Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights.

The BMW slammed into a green car that was being driven by a 78-year old woman who was westbound on Linden Boulevard.  According to eyewitnesses, the two-vehicle collision caused one of the two vehicles strike a pedestrian.

The force of the impact sent the green car through a chain-link fence before coming to a stop just short of hitting a home. The BMW landed on it one side and was butted up against a tree.

Also damaged in the crash was the unmarked police cruiser that had been pursuing the suspect. The two police officers inside the cruiser escaped serious injury.

The elderly woman was removed from her vehicle by emergency crews who attempted to save her. She died at the scene of the crash as the result of the injuries she sustained in the crash.  Her name has not been released pending notification of family.

The pedestrian was taken to North Shore University Hospital with a broken foot.

The driver of the BMW was uninjured in the crash.   The man, whose identity has also been withheld, was in his 20’s or 30’s.   He was arrested at the scene. Police sources say charges are pending.

Many people are seriously injured or even lose their lives as the result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time when police are in pursuit of a suspect.   This seems such a needless tragedy, especially when the manual for the New York Police Department specifically directs police officers to discontinue a pursuit; “whenever the risks to uniformed members of the service and the public outweigh the danger to the community if the suspect is not immediately apprehended."

The surviving family of this woman will more than likely file a lawsuit against the NYPD for not following their own directive.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured or has tragically lost their life in an accident involving a police or other emergency vehicle, there is a limited amount of time to file such a suit.  That is the time when an experienced law firm will fight on your side for the interests of you and your family and will be there in order to ensure that those responsible are held accountable
