New York Motorcyclist Dies after Accident in NY Helmet Protest
Posted on Jul 08, 2011
On July 3rd, over 500 motorcyclists met in upstate New York to protest state wide legislation that mandates motorcyclists to wear helmets. As part of the rally, the motorcyclists engaged in a 30 mile ride together. During this ride, a 55-year old man's morotcycle flipped over, and the man proceeded to hit his head on the ground. The man was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.
The death may have been avoided if the man were wearing a helmet. Studies have found that helmet usage can reduce one's chance of death by about 40 percent.
New York is only 1 of 20 states to mandate that motorcyclists wear helmets.
