On November 8th, 2010, OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, will put new crane operation rules into effect. The new regulations will require crane operators to obtain certifications. In addition, on site general contractors will be mandated to keep work sites free of any potential hazards while cranes are being utilized. The law will also call for cranes to be thoroughly inspected before being put to use. All these regulations come in response to the many crane related deaths and injuries that have occurred in the past several years. It's estimated that crane and derrick related accidents take the lives of about 100 people each and every year. Officials believe that the new legislation will decrease the amount of annual fatalities by about 20. Overall, many believe that these new rules will make the construction industry much safer for workers.
