Dual DUIs and speeding of over 90 MPH add an extra dose of tragedy to today’s case, which finally ended in a sentence.
In August of 2014, a man was driving down the Eastern Parkway. He was drunk, more than twice the legal limit. A woman in her early thirties was in the back seat with him. As they went down the Parkway, another driver plowed into the back of the vehicle.
While the driver was just over the intoxication limit, the speed was immense. 94 MPH. The speed limit on this road is 25 MPH. The woman in the back of the car was killed.
The driver of the speeding car has pled guilty to the incident. According to his lawyer, the man broke down in his office over what he had done. The guilt from the act has weighed heavily. He’s been sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison.
The original DUI driver has been given a sentence of five years of probation.
This just goes to show yet again the dangers of drinking while driving. Alcohol robs us of our ability to make good decisions and slows down our reactions. Add that to a moving vehicle and the result is injury or death. Never drink and drive.
