Long Island Gay and Lesbian Couples Get Marriage Equality

Posted on Jul 01, 2011

On June 24th, New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, passed the Marriage Equality Act. Cuomo put the bill into law after the New York Senate voted 33 to 29 in favor of the proposal. New York is now the 6th state to adopt same sex marriage.

Public sentiment towards the law has been extremely varied. For instance, in regards to the general public, voters are split about 54 to 40 percent in favor of the legislation. Additionally, for those whom are under the age of 35, about 70 percent are in favor of marriage equality. Lastly, in suburban areas such as our very own Long Island, about 52 percent of residents support the new law.

July 26th, will be the first day in which New York gay and lesbian couples will be able to get married under the Marriage Equality Act.
