Explosions and fires can cause not only incredible amounts of destruction but a tragic loss of life in their wake. Such an incident happened Wednesday night at an apartment complex in Maryland and has left two people dead and dozens more injured.
The explosion and large fire happened in an AnchorMaryland suburb of Washington D.C. just before midnight. The blast had all but completely leveled one building and fire quickly overtook the others. Currently, there are up to seven people still missing. Two victims were found under the rubble of the building.
According to Assistant Montgomery County Police Chief, Russ Hamill, three firefighters were also injured in the blaze with minor injuries and were among the 34 people who were taken to area hospitals for treatment and were later released. Hamill has asked that all building residents contact authorities as people to help determine those who have still not been accounted for. A K-9 team was deployed to the scene in order to search for more potential victims.
Firefighters were called to the four-story apartment complex and immediately found people in need of help. Fellow residents and neighbors were using household ladders in order to assist people in escaping from upper floors and balconies. Firefighters took over and helped more residents to escape from their apartments.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross estimates that approximately 100 people were displaced after the explosion and fire with 60 or 70 were staying at a Red Cross shelter that was set up at a community center located a short distance away.
Currently, the explosion and fire are still being investigated by county authorities along with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was likely caused by gas, as every apartment was equipped with a gas stove.
