A house fire in the Bronx has sent 12 people to the hospital, including four firefighters that were sent to Kingsbridge in order to fight the blaze.
According to FDNY officials, the fast-moving fire swept through a two-story home located at University Avenue and W. 195th Street in Kingsbridge on Saturday night at approximately 6:30 p.m. It’s believed that the fire started on the first floor.
As many as 100 firefighters worked for more than an hour to put out the flames which reached the second floor and attic and leaving window frames and walls blackened.
One of the twelve people has been listed in critical condition while 11 others, including the four firefighters, were treated for smoke inhalation.
FDNY investigators have informed the family that was living in the house that an electrical appliance ignited and caught a mattress on fire. The fire quickly spread throughout the dwelling.
It may take a while before investigators know completely what happened. If the electrical appliance caught fire, there could be product safety and liability issues involved. While a product safety claim may be difficult to prove, it is possible that the manufacturers of a defective or dangerous product can be held responsible for both the damage and the injuries caused by that product.
