Westbury Resident dies after taking on Westhampton Surf-What Can We Learn From This Tragedy?

A 51 year old Westbury resident died in a surfing accident on the east end on August 21 2009. The Westbury resident had recently taken up surfing and was practicing with his childeren and his surf instructor at the time of the accident. The instructor was giving lessons to his children at the time and they decided to go back and he stayed in the water with the instructor. While nobody saw the accident something happened and when he was pulled from the water and was unconscious. Taken to the hospital the man suffered head trauma and a break to the neck.
This is a very sad story and a tragedy for the family.Who is responsible? Clearly a 51 year old who is just begining to take surf lessons should be mindful of the water. An instructor was with him so there may be issues as to what he may have been doing at the time of the accident. We hear about drownings all the time in the ocean when the there are strong currents.
