Long Island's Parking Lot Madness: Personal Injury Attorney Neal Goldstein Tells How to Be Safe when Maneuvering through the Many Parking Lots around Nassau and Suffolk Counties
From Roosevelt Field to Walt Whitman Mall to every local supermarket, Long Island parking lots are crowded, dangerous, and a common scene for car accidents to occur. In fact, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 14 percent of all vehicle collisions take place in parking lots. To stay safe, personal injury attorney Neal Goldstein offers these five tips to follow in parking lots:
1.) Find the Best Spot to Protect Your Car: The best place to park to protect your car is at the end of a row next to an island. However, if there is no island, an end spot leaves your car vulnerable to turning traffic. Another good spot is in front of a light pole. The pole protects the car from a driver who might pull too far forward and hit the front end, and the light also provides added security at night. Bad spots to avoid include next to a shopping cart drop-off or cars that are not parked straight or properly in their spot.
2.) Be Vigilant about Your Surroundings: Watch for cars cutting across parking lots and speeding through aisles. Be observant of pedestrians, lone shopping carts that may roll, and parked cars with passengers who might suddenly open their door without looking.
3.) Be Careful Leaving Your Spot: Make sure you look cautiously in each direction for shoppers and other cars when backing out. Take special notice that the car directly behind you is not backing out of its spot. If possible, pull through when you park—leaving a spot head-first instead of backing out will keep you safer.
4.) Walk Back to Your Car Safely: When leaving or returning to your car, don't dart between vehicles. Look both ways, listen carefully, and be especially observant of back-up lights.
5.) Follow the Rules: Drive slowly and carefully, use your turn signal, and make sure to go the right way down aisles if they are marked one-way. Never stop or park in a fire lane or create your own spot.
