It seems like every kid has a Facebook account these days. While many parents may think their child is "just on it to play the games," the truth is most are chatting, posting photos, and sharing tons of personal information. That is why it is so important for even for the least tech-savvy parents to realize how important-and not all that difficult-it is to monitor their children's accounts and keep them as safe as possible. Here's some helpful tips to keep your child safe on Facebook:
Make sure your child's profile is private-privacy settings can be found by clicking the arrow at the top right of the page.
Don't just "friend" your child-they can control what information you see. Know your child's password and login as them to see what they are posting and also to make sure they are not seeing inappropriate content or photos from others.
Check your child's friend list and make sure these are all people your child knows. Children should only be friends with other children close in age to them. Any adults or older children should either be relatives or very close friends that you trust. One of the most dangerous aspects of Facebook is the ease in which sexual predators are able to "friend" kids and gain their trust.
Have your child remove any inappropriate content or photos.
Have your child use only their first and middle name.
Be careful posting pictures from a smart phone. These photos can give location. Make sure to delete any location information.
Always be on the lookout to any evidence of cyberbullying you see-whether it is directed at your child or someone on their friend list.
Facebook doesn't have to be a scary, dangerous place-but it is important for parents to be vigilant in monitoring their kids' Internet activity and teaching their kids how to use the Internet safely.
