You Have Rights!

The above article was in the New York Times newspaper on June 18, 2009. The article is about undocumented workers who were injured in construction accidents. Each worker was allowed to proceed with a lawsuit. The fact that each worker was here illegally did not prevent them from bringing a lawsuit. The workers were Mexican and Ecuadorean. One was injured doing plumbing work when a pipe exploded burning his body. Another was injured when a piece of steel fell on his foot. Another fractured a hip during a roofing job. A famous case called Balbuena verses IDR Realty ruled that laborers who are here without documentation have rights like other workers. The executive director of Association Tepeyac said that undocumented laborers should stand up to abusive employers who try to intimidate workers by telling them they will be deported if they claim workers compensation or bring lawsuits to recover money.
