For the third year in a row, Hempstead Turnpike has topped the list of deadliest roads for pedestrians in the New York tri-state area. Sunrise Highway, Middle Country Road and Merrick Road also made the list in a report by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. As attorneys with offices right on Hempstead Turnpike, we are not surprised by the results. In addition to handling many accidents that happened on Hempstead Turnpike, we have witnessed accidents right outside our door.
Here is a summary of the results (fatalities for period from 2006--2009):
Deadliest Roads/Pedestrian Fatalities
1 Hempstead Turnpike, Nassau County/12
2 Broadway, Manhattan /11
3 Burlington Pike, Burlington, NJ /10
4 Sunrise Highway, Suffolk County/9
5 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn/8
(tie) Seventh Avenue, Manhattan/8
(tie) Henry Hudson Parkway, Manhattan/8
8 Sunrise Highway, Nassau Country/7
(tie) Middle Country Road, Suffolk County/7
19 Merrick Road, Nassau County/6
According to the report, roads such as Hempstead Tpke. and Sunrise Hwy .that are busy east-west thoroughfares with up to six traffic lanes are the typical roads that produce the most pedestrian fatalities. These roads also include at least two travel lanes in one direction and are bordered by retail businesses such as shopping centers and restaurants, the report said. It also cited poor road design as a factor in pedestrian fatalities.
What Can Be Done to Improve These Roads?
According to the state Department of Transportation, plans are underway to install countdown timers at every intersection on Long Island with a traffic signal to improve pedestrian safely. Other improvements are planned for Hempstead Turnpike, including repainted crosswalks, upgraded pedestrian buttons on traffic signals and a pedestrian-safety campaign aimed at educating senior citizens called "Safe Seniors."
We are happy to hear of these plans and hope they are implemented soon enough to save more lives. There are other major flaws in the Turnpike's design, including areas with poor sight-distance, quick lights for pedestrians, and no island for those walkers who get caught in the middle of the road. In addition, speeding drivers changing lanes and roadside distractions play a role in many of the accidents.
