If you have made decision to leave your accident lawyer then you need to take the following easy steps to make sure there is a smooth transition to your new lawyer.

Valentines Day- Breaking Up is so hard to do..Or is it? Its easy! If your relationship with your lawyer is on the brink then we will make the transfer to our office easy as pie. In fact you won't even have to say goodbye to your old lawyer.

HeartAlways keep in mind that you, the client, are the boss. In fact anytime you feel its over with your accident lawyer "then its over"! The relationship between you and your lawyer is no different than any other relationship. There must be a good chemistry between the two of you and communication is key. We have talked in the past about your relationship with your lawyer and how you can make it stronger. But what if its time to say goodbye? Then the following steps should be taken:

1.Keep Copies of All Your Important Documents- This means retainer agreements, police reports, photographs, initial hospital reports, summons and complaint as well as the bill of particulars if there has been a legal matter started in court. These documents are important when interviewing a new lawyer. The new lawyer will want to know something about your case and how much work the old lawyer did. Some of these documents may be accessabile online. Remember you own this file and your old lawyer should not hesitate one bit in providing you this information.

2. Find A Lawyer That You Like- Of course you want a competent lawyer but it should not be so difficult to find both a likeable lawyer and a smart one. There are plenty of us out there. Its important to have the right chemistry and to feel good about the person representing you. Dont fall for the "dont worry about his personality as long as he knows what he is doing". That's a bunch of B.S. Your lawyer represents you and if his personality sucks with you then it probably sucks with the insurance company and with other lawyers and with juries who may hear your case one day.Read my blog on how to find the right lawyer for you. 3. Make Sure That Your New Lawyer Aggressively Gets Your File From The Old Lawyer- Fiest I will tell you that you never have to talk to your old lawyer again. Once he hears from your new lawyer he may try to contact you even though your new lawyer will direct him not to. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TALK TO YOUR OLD LAWYER. There should be a smooth transition of your file. Unfortunately many times the old lawyer will fight with the new lawyer about tuning over your file. If this goes on too long then you can file a complaint. Otherwise your new lawyer should get a court order directing that the file be turned over immediately. Stay on top of your new lawyer so that this occurs without too much down time.

4. Never Pay More That What You Originally Agreed To-If you originally agreed to give your old lawyer one-third of the total recovery then that is all your going to pay. Your new lawyer will work out the division of fees with your old lawyer. If they can't come to an agreement then they will have a hearing in court in which the Judge will determine who gets what.

In sum, relationships are important. You must like the person your with. They represent you to the world. If you need to talk to me or any lawyer in my offfice please contact us.
