Have Concerts and Music Festivals Become Too Dangerous?

Long Island concert and summer festivalsMusic festivals have become very popular, especially among young teens and college students. These events can last a full day, an evening, a weekend or take place over the course of several weekends. Some popular festivals in our area include The Electric Zoo, Governor’s Ball, Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, Vans Warped Tour, NYC Popfest and Summer Jam.

Unfortunately, some of these concerts have been tarnished by injuries, sexual assaults and even death. Recently a rail collapsed at a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert in New Jersey, injuring 42 people. The causes of these horrible tragedies are crowding, poor security, poor site maintenance drug overdoses, inadequate lighting, overheating and rowdy/drunken fans.

Concert planners, promoters and venues need to take steps to ensure that the attendees are safe from foreseeable dangers. This includes:

  • Having adequate security
  • Controlling the crowd in general admission areas
  • Limiting the audience to safe numbers
  • Having adequate exits for an emergency
  • Checking all bags and attendees as they enter
  • Having adequate bathroom facilities
  • Any structures for the performers and audience are safe and well-maintained

In addition, many of these festivals are now taking extra precautions, including:

  • Extra security
  • First-aid staff
  • Peer-support teams
  • Water stations

If you are a concert-goer or a parent of one, the most important way to keep safe is to use good judgment and be aware of your surroundings.

Sometimes, however, when a concert venue, promoter, organizer or performer does not take steps to keep fans safe, these accidents and injuries are unavoidable. For example, a performer incites fans to the point of riots, the seating structures are rotted and collapse, inadequate security leads to fights and violence or overcrowding by the stage caused fans to get crushed.
