Four Key Strategies to Finding the Right New York Personal Injury Lawyer

You may know lawyer Dominic Barbara from his multiple appearances on the Howard Stern show. Or from representing infamous Long Island names like Joey Buttafuco, Jessica Hahn, and Michael Lohan. New York Magazine once called him the "biggest, brassiest lawyer on Long Island." But a court recently called him incompetent and suspended his license for 18 months. The jurists noted that Barbara had an "avalanche" of Grievance Committee sanctions levied against him since 1988, including nine letters of caution, nine admonitions, and two advisements. That's a lot.

So is this the type of lawyer you want? The Barbara Law Firm's website boasts that they are "always cognizant of the personal and emotional nature of our work, our attorneys are renowned for their unparalleled dedication to detail as well as our passion in handling our clients' many unique and sensitive issues."

Really? Because among the charges was that Barbara neglected to return a large retainer after a client changed lawyers, that he did not properly supervise the lawyers in his office, and that he engaged in conduct that adversely reflected on his fitness as a lawyer by failing to adequately communicate with a client.

So if it's not fancy clients and media-seeking attention you want from a lawyer, what should you look for in legal counsel?

1.) Communication is Key. Find a lawyer you are comfortable talking to and who seems to make time to talk to you and learn first-hand about your case. A lawyer should be willing to fully discuss any questions or concerns you have.
2.) Satisfied Clients. Research the past work of an attorney. Check with past clients, colleagues, and judges and look for press coverage of past cases. In addition, you can search peer-review online databases such as martindale.com
3.) Experience. Make sure that any lawyer you're considering has adequate experience, not only in law, but also in the specific cases of your type. In addition, make sure that he has adequate trial experience. Many lawyers don't actually try lawsuits.
4.) Specialty. Some law firms will claim they specialize in nearly everything under the sun. Try to find a lawyer that truly handles cases in the area your lawsuit falls under.
