My lawyer wants to charge me one-third as a fee for working on my accident case. Is this fair?

A: In New York lawyers who handle accident cases generally handle the matter on a contingency basis. It means that they will only earn a fee if and only if there is a financial recovery beyond the financial expenses of the case. Another words if the lawyer gets money for you on the case you owe him as a fee one third of the recovery less expenses. If there is no recovery then you owe the lawyer nothing. The lawyer may NEVER charge you more than one-third. Although they can charge you less lawyers generally wont take less of a fee. The fees are covered by New York laws.
