A new report shows the number of teen driver deaths has risen sharply and many blame the distractions that come with today’s mobile devices, including texting and chatting with friends while behind the wheel.
Despite nationwide campaigns to highlight the dangers of using a cell phone while driving, it is still all too common to see people busy on their phones while driving on Long Island’s popular roads and highways such as the Northern State, Sunrise Highway, Meadowbrook Parkway and Old Country Road. It never ceases to amaze me when I see a driver on the Northern State speeding at 70 miles per hour with a cell phone in hand. With all the distractions that we are not able to control, this is something everyone can easily do to help save lives—wait until you get to your destination to send that text, reply to a message or talk to your friend.
In a recent survey, 90 percent of teenage drivers acknowledged they have texted or talked on the phone while driving even though they were aware that this increased the risk of an accident. If you have a teenager who drives or rides with friends, make sure they understand just how dangerous it is to use a phone while driving, especially for young and relatively inexperienced, new drivers.
