A recent study shows that Hempstead Turnpike is among one of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the entire Tri-State area. Between the years 2006 to 2008, 13 pedestrians were killed on Hempstead Turnpike as a result of car collisions--more than any other road in the region. To me, this unfortunate statistic does not come as any great suprise, as my office has dealt with many accidents that have occured on this road.
City leaders have taken notice of this danger and have tried to put more money into improving the safety of the road. Some have even considered installing more red light cameras. In addition to these hopeful safety improvements, I encourage that pedestrians be smart and only cross the street at defined intersections and try to avoid walking when it's dark out or difficult to see. I think that 13 pedestrian fatalities on a single road within a 3-year span sounds like way too high a number. I want to see this number lowered, and I want to see Long Island residents remain safe.
