In a scenario that has played out all too often on the Long Island roadways, an off-duty New York City police officer was killed and another man critically wounded when their speeding car careened out of control and crashed into a tree early Thursday in Westbury, police said.
The crash occurred at about 2:30 am, when the black 1994 Honda was headed north on Carman Avenue at “a high rate of speed,” according to Nassau police spokesman Det. Lt. Keven Smith. Smith said the Honda hit a curb and a tree, spun around and slammed into another tree. The car was crushed with the officer trapped inside. The other man was ejected 50 feet into the air before landing on a Westbury sidewalk and suffered serious head injuries.
Police are not sure which man was the driver, but luckily, no other cars or pedestrians were involved.
