New York City Construction Accident Lawyer Lauds Safety Campaign

New York City construction accident attorney Neal Goldstein is praising the New York City’s buildings commissioner Robert LiMandri’s new multilingual campaign that emphasizes the importance of using fall harnesses, guardrails, and netting on construction sites.

“As a construction accident attorney who has represented workers throughout New York City, I see the tragic results of accidental falls from ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. But what’s more tragic is that many of the devastating injuries and deaths that result could have been avoided if the workers were provided a safe environment and were using proper and working safety equipment,” said Goldstein, owner and partner of the firm Goldstein and Bashner. “In many cases, these workplace accidents are the result of contractors who try to cut corners with no regard for the safety of our city’s construction workers,” Goldstein said.

According to NYC Buildings Department data, 42 percent of all construction accidents reported to it in 2010 were falls, and 16 construction workers have died since 2008 because they lacked basic fall protection. “Hopefully this campaign will send a message to construction owners that workplace safety violations will not be tolerated, as well as to workers to make sure they are given safety equipment and use it.”

The new campaign was timed to coincide with the annual Construction Safety Week. The event included panel discussions on such topics as accident prevention, safety innovations and the safe use of scaffolds.
