Here on Long Island, as well as all over the country, bullying has become a tremendous problem both in the schools and now at home through text messaging and social networking sites like Facebook. When we first decided to get involved in creating an anti-bullying campaign, we started a Facebook discussion group called STOP Bullying on Long Island, published a helpful resource for parents entitled Bullying-Fighting Back: A Legal Guide for Parents of Bullied Children and posted useful articles on our website. We were interviewed for other articles, including Avvo’s Ask a Lawyer: How to Stop Cyberbullying.
But even we were not prepared for the flood of calls we get from parents with questions about bullying and specific incidents involving their children. The stories all carried a similar theme: kids being abused and tormented repeatedly while frustrated parents felt that school officials and staff either ignored their complaints or did not do enough in response to previous incidents.
