It’s Back to School Time: 10 Safety Tips to Ensure Your Children Arrive Safely

Comments (2)

School is back in session and we know you may be nervous as your child walks out the door to begin a new school year.

Here are essential tips to help keep them safer from the bus stop to the end of the day:

  1. Does your child walk to school? Make sure they have a safe route that avoids busy intersections and isolated areas.
  2. If you are not accompanying them, have them walk in a group or at least with one friend.
  3. If your child takes the bus, make sure they know their bus stop as well as the bus number that picks them up.
  4. When crossing the street, they should cross in front of a stopped bus that has its stop sign out for traffic.
  5. If your child bicycles to school, make sure they understand the rules for riding in the street. Get them a book rack and make sure they are not carrying more than they can handle while riding.
  6. Tell your child to stay observant and aware of their surroundings as they go to school. If they think they are in danger, teach them what to do—they should yell “help” and run to the nearest business or back to school.
  7. Tell your child, if a stranger asks them questions, they should not get close to the car. Make sure they know to never talk to and especially get in a car with anyone that they do not personally know.
  8. Tell them never to be afraid to ask for help or assistance from a law enforcement person, teacher, store owner or friend if they need it.
  9. Tell your child that if they are ever in a situation that makes them uncomfortable, they have the right to say no, loud and clear.
  10. Make sure you know your child's plans after school. If they have a cell phone, encourage them to send a quick text if they go somewhere after school and have them text again when they arrive safely.
