When you hear of a tire explosion, your first thought is probably of a tire on a car, suv, or truck, but tire explosions can happen on hand trucks as well. Did you know nearly 300,000 hand trucks by Harper Trucks Inc. were recalled after several people were injured by tires that explode when overinflated? The recall was issued in 2011 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after the company received at least 19 reports of overinflated tires exploding resulting in 19 injuries. At least one person lost sight in one eye and there were also reports of broken bones, contusions and lacerations.
In Feb 2015, approximately 273,000 Costco hand trucks have been recalled after the manufacturer received nearly a dozen reports of the wheel hubs bursting during inflation, including incidents where users suffered bruises or lacerations from ejected pieces. At least 10 confirmed problems with the wheel hubs separating or breaking. This may cause pieces to be sent flying from the hand truck, posing an injury hazard for users or bystanders.
The Costco hand trucks were manufactured from January 2009 to October 2011 were sold at Costco Wholesale Club, Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, Price Mart, and United Stationers stores and online at TheHomeDepot.com from March 2009 through October 2011.
Injuries from exploding tires can be serious. People have lost their fingers because they were severed, causing lasting permanent life altering damage.
