Hempstead Turnpike Continues to Present High Accident Risk to Pedestrians

Hempstead Turnpike has long been considered Long Island’s most dangerous road for pedestrians, far ahead of Sunrise Highway, Jericho Turnpike and all other main thoroughfares in pedestrian injuries and deaths per vehicles traveled. A Newsday study of accidents from 2005 through 2010 found that in this time period, 32 pedestrians were killed and at least 427 injured in 457 pedestrian accidents on Hempstead Turnpike. It’s no wonder the Tri-State Transportation Campaign ranked it the deadliest road for pedestrians in the metropolitan area since 2008

Among the dangers of this 16-mile road are long distances between crosswalks, short crossing lights and poor sight-distance areas due to overpasses, slopes and bends in the road.

Six lanes wide in most places, the 16-mile thoroughfare winds its way through the residential downtowns of Elmont, Franklin Square and Hempstead Village and the commercial hubs of East Meadow, Levittown, Wantagh and Farmingdale.

The Department of Transportation and Nassau County have started making some quick fixes, installing countdown clocks for pedestrians, increasing crossing time allowed and adding left-turn lanes. But there are still many design issues with the road, as well as drivers and pedestrians who do not follow traffic laws.

Our office is especially concerned about these accidents because our East Meadow office is located on Hempstead Turnpike. We have written many articles on the dangers of this road, and we are dedicated to protecting and representing accident victims to ensure they get the compensation they need and deserve. Our experienced lawyers give each case their full time and dedication, working with a team of top-notch investigators and medical experts to collect evidence, determine who is at fault and document injuries and damages.
